LawPracticeZA - or LP for short - is our flagship product. LP is a full practice application for South African lawyers and advocates and helps do all the boring accounting stuff, according to the Legal Practice Act’s rules, as well as according to general accounting practices. It’s also packed with a whole lot of productivity tools to help lawyers, who - bless them - aren’t always the most technically inclined.

SpotOn Compliance Systems

SpotOn is a legal compliance project Nicholas has been working on since around 2014 with Cormac Cullinan and his law firm Cullinan & Associates. Perhaps you’ve heard of a thing called a Legal Register? Many companies are obliged to have a legal register once they are a certain size, or when they engage in a business activity which has some kind of environmental, health or safety impact. Usually a business discovers they need a legal register, they get a lawyer to spend weeks compiling it and then it gets printed out and never looked at again, except briefly by an auditor once a year.

Paper Video delivers high-quality video lesson content for high school learners in South Africa.
We built Paper Video’s video content delivery system, API, online store, sponsor reporting and back-office tools together with iOS and Android apps for high-school learners.
Here are some of the interesting aspects of the Paper Video project from a dev perspective:
QR code generation ‘Jingling’ videos - prepending the Paper Video branding jingle cheaply (ie without re-rendering) to each video using MP4Box Production workflow tools from typesetting to video production Creating Content Access Portals - aka WiFi Boxes - for delivering Paper Video content to rural schools with little or no internet access.

The Drama Factory is the brainchild of Sue Diepeveen who has brought a much needed independent theatre venue to Somerset West / Strand.
The Drama Factory manages to put on an impressive programme of independent original South African drama, physical theatre, cabaret and even a few big-name stand-up comedy acts. There’s a peppering of crowd-pleasing revues - Sue brilliantly manages the delicate balance between edgy new work from recent graduates and the bums-on-seats brigade.

eCapture started life as a bridge between traditional paper-based consumer research surveys and the capabilities offered by modern mobile devices. With our first iteration of this project we took the paper-based surveys that the operators were used to, rendered as an image and then overlaid form inputs over it. So on a tablet it felt very similar to doing the survey on paper - just a bit quicker and with the obvious benefit of elmininating the manual capture step from paper.

ActiveDNS is our dynamic DNS service for use locally in SA. It keeps a domain name up-to-date with a the changing IP addresses that you ISP gives you. This is so that you can access machines (at home or at work) that are connected to the internet by ADSL. Not recommended if you require 99% uptime but great for backup systems or for fault-tolerant networks exploiting cheap local bandwidth.
ActiveDNS supports the DynDNS2 protocol which means that you can use any DynDNS client to keep your IP up-to-date.

Professor Pierre de Vos' blog comments critically on current events through a constitutional lens. He makes his analysis accessible to lay-people, with humour, and without dumbing-down complex matters. Constitutionally Speaking is a resource that journalists, activists and intellectuals whether of the academy or of the arm-chair variety turn to to sharpen their understanding of what’s happening and what the ramifications and possibilities are in terms of the constitution.
We provide hosting and technical support services for constitutionallyspeaking.

SecureBooking offers travel services including hotels, tours, and safaris to luxury destinations around Southern Africa. Somewhere around 2001 we implemented their booking system. Booking systems can get rather complicated:
The booking itself must navigate through the a complex workflow. Bookings can land up in various states while also integrating with various hotel software systems, payment gateways, as well as keeping the client and affiliates up-to-date.
As the business grows and as technologies adapt over time, we are still pleased how well the original structure was flexible enough to handle all the new and on-going requirements.
